Module 8.1 Assignment Submission: Teaching Speaking
Prompt: You are teaching a group of high beginners (A2). These students are adults (ages
25-50) in Moscow, Russia taking English classes at a community center.
“How to Put Together a Good Party”.
Lead-in: First of all, I will start a conversation by having some pictures where students
can see the real view of the topic or by showing them a video with some purposes and I
will continue the conversation by asking some questions about parties, such as “What is
a party for you?”, “How often do you attend parties?”, “What kinds of parties do you
know?” or “Which of them do you like most to take part in?” and will engage them with
questions and captivate their attention.
Set the task: As we this point is of paramount importance to arrange the class activity
where we give students some instruction so that they can feel confident and involved in
the activity. For example: “Please, get ready to practice as if you are planning a party for
the occasion of moving to a new house”. And will assign students each of them as a
party planner and the others as guests coming to the newly bought house. I will supply
the part planners with an Ipad and a pen so that they can start planning from the first
steps and also I will give students (guests) invitations. And what is needed for the party
will be shown by me, I mean I will provide them with an explanation of their
responsibilities. I will take one of the strongest students who can assist me as a party
planner(By the way, being chosen as a strong student by the teacher is considered to
be the teacher appreciation which of course motivates students to be chosen one like
someone who differs from others) I think I will have to ask if they understand the rules
and after getting a response like “yes” or “definitely” so forth. I will start the role play with
“Hi, Rose, we have moved to a new house and we are going to throw a party(a
housewarming party) and here is your invitation. I would be really pleased to see you
among the guests. When the students grasp the main point of what they will do, I will
give the required time limit and will ask them to start talking to one another.
Monitor the task: When the students begin their performance I will ramble in the
classroom to observe the process that everything is going according to the given
instructions. I will be behind them for not causing the distraction in the students'
