, The impacts of Tourism in the case of Dubai
Dubai makes the perfect destination for countless tourists for numerous
reasons such as its strategic geographic location situated between
Europe, Asia and Africa, excellent infrastructure, proactive economic
policies, clean beaches, sunshine throughout the year and its mild winter
season especially for visitors from western countries to enjoy coastal
areas and archeological sites. It is also the epitome of excess, endless
glamour, and luxury with Burj Khalifa standing at 829.8 meters tall, the
Dubai Mall being about 502,000 square meters, the Armani hotel being
exclusively designed by Giorgio Armani and Burj Al-Arab hotel standing
321 meters high with 202 luxury suites costing more than $15,000 for one
night.
Tourism in the past 3 decades has become one of the most important
economic sectors for almost every destination we can possibly imagine
including one of the most popular and luxurious emirates in the UAE,
Dubai. Firstly, it is important to understand that Tourism just like
everything else in life has both positive and negative aspects.
Starting with the positive aspect, it is an industry which employees a lot of
people in various positions, it ensures financial benefit for the place of
destination, it promotes unity and peace on a worldwide extent, it helps
with the promotion and acknowledgement of different cultures, traditions
and customs and it gives the visitors the opportunity to broaden their
horizons and accumulate knowledge in a relaxing enjoyable setting.
On the contrary the negative aspect includes that, the job opportunities
may be seasonal and may come with an unstable income, a lot of the
money earned from tourism is not invested in the local economy and is
instead used by big companies and corporations for international projects,
culture and traditions might be influenced or remodelled by outside
factors, it causes overcrowding and traffic jams and damages the natural
environment due to the excessive littering and pollution.
The hospitality and tourism industry in Dubai has seen enormous growth
over the past few years, according to reports from “statista.com” in 2006
the hospitality sector limited to only hotels and restaurants accounted for
4 billion dollars of the total GDP, in 2016 it accounted for 11.4 billion
dollars of the total GDP and in 2026 estimates predict that it will account
for 20.9 billion dollars of the total GDP. The above statistics prove that
even though tourism in Dubai is not a very old tradition and is rather a
new phenomenon, they still manage to set the bar exceptionally high
since it is now considered a key business centre with a very dynamic and
diverse economy, as well as one of the most luxurious destinations in the
world.
