It isn’t necessarily related to my current specialty of cardiac surgery, but as a family nurse
practitioner it could have major implications. The article discusses the IBM super computer
named Watson and its applications to the healthcare field. There are several studies and projects
going to determine why some cancers are susceptible to drug treatments while others never react
or mutate to defend against treatment. Other applications are regarding medication safety by
building a bigger database and algorithm to determine adverse side effects of medications.
I selected this article because I thought it sounded interesting. Upon reading it and then
researching artificial intelligence/cognitive technologies, I became extremely intrigued. At first,
I didn’t really know what to write about or how to approach this project. Once I began
researching, I found so many applicable articles and so many avenues to travel down I had to
rein myself in! Artificial intelligence seems to be the way of the future. Just as many jobs and
professions have been made safer and more efficient by machines, I think that there is a strong
possibility that this could happen in the medical field. I still think that there will be no
replacement for the human experience, but many things can be more efficiently done by a
cognitive technology.
The implications of this article are many. It has the potential to impact the landscape of
medicine and the very way it is practiced. Advances in technology and innovations should be
embraced as they help improve limited resources and the quality and safety of care delivered
(Furst et al., 2013). Over the past 50 years, technology has changed the practice of nursing and
healthcare by improving efficiency and safe patient practices (Furst et al., 2013). Furthermore,
, the perception of technology has changed over the past decades (Booth, 2016). A significant
amount of healthcare workers and the general public use a mobile internet device on a daily basis
(Booth, 2016). With such a widespread adoption of technology and informatics skills across a
cross section of the population innovation is required and expected (Booth, 2016). Nursing
informatics must continually advance and assess new ways to deliver safe patient care that uses
both human and non-human capabilities (Booth, 2016).
