Unit 8 Assignment 5 (M2 D2) – Destination Focus: Sydney

Sydney is one of the most famous cities in the world and is located on the south east coast of
Australia. It is a rather accessible city with many long-haul flights landing in the city and lots of local
transport such as buses trains and ferries. Long-haul flights are relatively expensive to go to Sydney.
An average flight for a family of four to fly form London costs around £2000. This may put groups
such as families off traveling to Sydney as it is expensive. From regional airports in the UK there is
around a couple flights a day to Sydney, which make it relatively accessible. There is usually between
1-3 stop-overs when travelling long-haul to Sydney and gets cheaper the more stop-overs the flights
has. However, this also increases the time of the flight which is also not suitable for families if they
have young children, as it can take from 22 hours to up to 55 hours. It is also cheaper for UK visitors
to go to Sydney when it is summer here and winter there. Between winter and summer in Sydney,
flights for one adult can vary between £604-£906. Tourists that are likely to visit Australia are
couples or individuals as it is cheaper than going in big groups. Sydney may also be suitable for
business travellers if they have to commute there, this is because the company they work for may
pay for their travel and accommodation. As stop-overs make flights cheaper, this may be beneficial
to students as they might not have enough money to pay for flights direct or with only one stop-
over. Flights with two or more stop-overs can still cost around £800.

There are many different places for tourists in Sydney. This ranges from built and natural attractions
to shopping culture and events. A few famous built attractions in Sydney include, Sydney Harbour,
the Museum of Sydney and the Sydney Opera House. The Sydney Opera House is one of the most
popular tourist attractions in Australia and produces more than 7 million tourists visiting there each
year. It offers a variety of difference shows and performances as well as guided tours. Around 1.2
million people go to these performances, attracting a large audience, whether it be elderly people or
individuals. Similar to cities like London and New York, I would say that the majority of Sydney’s built
attractions cater to all visitor types as there are both modern and old places to visit.

Natural attractions include the Blue Mountains, Tabronga Zoo, Sydney Aquarium and Bondi Beach.
Bondi Beach is an iconic stretch and one of the world’s most famous beach destinations. The beach
can be used any time of the year and it is popularly used for walking, water sports and whale
watching. This attracts around 1 million tourists every year. The type of visitors that are likely to visit
these natural attractions would be families with children and younger people, because there are lots
of different activities for them to do there. Sydney should try and offer certain natural attractions to
the elderly, as, other than beaches, there is not many natural attractions for them to go to.

There are many places to shop in Sydney, and the main shopping centre is Westfield Sydney. The
centre contains over 250 local and international shops and receives a huge 43.8 million visitors each
year. Shopping centres will attract mostly young people e.g. students, however, due to the size of
Westfield it is likely to have all types of tourists. Furthermore, as Westfield is an international
shopping centre with centres in London and America, this means that it would attract lots of
international tourists. I would say that Sydney does not have to develop their shopping attractions,
as they already attract all the different customer types.

The events in Sydney are world famous with Sydney Festival, Mardi Gras and The Australian Open.
The Australian Open is one of the biggest events in tennis. This may appeal to students that are
interested in sports. Visiting the https://www.sydney.com/ website allows people to look at the wide
variety of attractions in this city, which range from shopping to natural attractions. There are many
