From the Edexcel advanced notice, we can make some educated guesses about what your exam paper
could possibly look like in the Summer. I must stress, this is a best guess, and does not mean that these are
the only questions you should focus on, but it may help you target your revision more closely to exam
practice!

Edexcel have narrowed down the content and we know that there will roughly be one question on each of
the following four topics. Two will be a source question, two won’t be – but we won’t know which ones
until the day!
Subject Content Specification Bullet Points and Areas to Revise
1. Democracy 1.3 Pressure groups and other influences:
and How different pressure groups exert influence and how their methods
participation and influence vary in contemporary politics.
Case studies of two different pressure groups, highlighting examples of
how their methods and influence vary.
Other collective organisations and groups including think tanks, lobbyists
and corporations, and their influence on government and Parliament.
1.4 Rights in context:
Major milestones in their development, including the significance of
Magna Carta and more recent developments, including the Human
Rights Act 1998 and Equality Act 2010.
Debates on the extent, limits and tensions within the UK’s rights-based
culture, including consideration of how individual and collective right
may conflict, the contributions from civil liberties pressure groups –
including the work of two contemporary civil liberties pressure groups.
Expect a 30 marker on:
Pressure Groups and Human Rights – they’ll likely link this together and do a question on how PGs defend
Human Rights (maybe comparing with Supreme Court). You could get a question just on PGs or rights as
separates. There is also a common area of focus that the exam often looks at which is the role of ‘other
bodies’ such as Think Tanks and Lobbying – make sure you have examples of these in practice.
1. “Evaluate the view that Pressure Groups are able to adequately protect Human Rights”
2. “Evaluate the view that Pressure Groups interrupt the system of democracy”
3. “Evaluate the view that Think Tanks and Lobbyists are inappropriate parts of the UK system”
Possible other questions:
Evaluate the view that Pressure groups hinder democracy more than they enhance it.
Evaluate the view that Pressure group success is largely determined by popular support.
Evaluate the view that think tanks are damaging to democracy.
Evaluate the view that lobbying of Parliament is subject to insufficient scrutiny.
Evaluate the view that the Human Rights Act needs replacement or reform.
Evaluate the view that Civil liberties in the UK are under serious threat.
