HIST 410N Week 2 Discussion 2: Nationalism and the Treaty of Versailles What were reasons that led to the ultimate failure of the Treaty of Versailles? What were the challenges facing the newly-formed League of Nations, and why was it so difficult to form a lasting agreement that would prevent another war? Elaborate. The Treaty of Versailles, signed on June 28, 1919 in Versailles, was the most important of the peace treaties that brought World War I to an end. The Treaty ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers (Trueman, 2016). Of the many provisions in the treaty, one of the most important and controversial required Germany to accept the responsibility of causing all the loss and damage during the war. The only two choices that were given to Germany were to either sign the treaty or be invaded by the allies. Germany ended up signing, however, the treaty forced Germany to disarm, make substantial territorial concessions, and pay reparations to certain countries. Therefore, a major reason the Treaty of Versailles failed was due to the harsh rules and statements that Germany was required to implement. The treaty demanded Germany to accept full responsibility for causing WWI and severely forced this country to pay for a large amount of reparations. Additionally, the treaty failed because of the lack of enforcement and lack of willingness of the allied powers- many terms stipulated in the treaty were not implemented (Huot, 2014). Huot, S. (2014, April 18). Why Did the Treaty of Versailles of 1919 Fail? Retrieved from Trueman, N. (2016, August 16). The Treaty of Versailles.
