Because you have been in the program for a while now, you have had many opportunities to get
to know others in the group fairly well. For this introduction, we're going to shift gears a bit.
During this course you will be relating many of your discussions and assignments to your project
proposal you anticipate completing for your practicum. Please introduce yourself to the class and
instructor and include the following information.
1. Description of the type of facility by which you are employed.
2. Your current position and for how long
3. Your prior experience in financial management
4. Share the PICO(T) you anticipate using for the final practicum project.
* (For review of creating a PICOT see the example below or watch the media
presentation located in resources and announcements)
5. What led you to choose this issue/topic? With whom have you collaborated, or will you
consult about the issue at your facility?
6. What type of expenses/costs would you need to consider in helping you develop a
preliminary budget for your project?
Dr. Schaefer and classmates,
My name is Kesha, and I am currently employed by Advent Health North Pinellas in Tarpon
Springs, Florida. It is a small local hospital that has 4 units; 14 bed CCU, 33 bed PCU, 36 bed
Telemetry/med-surg unit and a 30 bed ortho/med-surg as well as a 45-bed transitional care unit. I
am currently a night shift charge nurse on the ortho/med-surg unit. I have been a nurse for three
and half years and have been in the charge position for approximately eight months, I have little
experience in financial management. I was a front office assistant in a physician office for fifteen
years where I was in charge of collecting all payments from the patients that were seen.
As far as the practicum project I am still at a loss for what I want to do. There are many different
avenues I could pursue but staffing shortage issues sits very high on the list, I am just not
completely sure how to go about pursuing this project idea.
I know that I will be collaborating with my nursing director and CNO as they are very aware of
my concerns about the staffing for my unit. We had a lengthy discussion this week about how my
unit is constantly being understaffed so that the remainder of the hospital units are appropriately
staffed with little regard to our unit. There would be many different expenses that would need to
be discussed. Cost of hiring and training new nurses and cna’s, possible bonuses for new nurse
sign on, bonuses for current nurses that are willing to help during the shortage, possible short-
term contracts that offer bonuses for both nurses and cna’s.
I know that I have a lot of work ahead to create this project, but I believe it could be a project
that could get some thought and recognition and may possibly help this nursing shortage.
I look forward to this quarter even though I am a little nervous about it. I hope that everyone had
a great first week and look forward to the next 7 with everyone.
Kesha Clark
