, Question 1:
1.1 Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviours,
skills, values, attitudes and preferences. The result of the learning process is a relatively
permanent change in the way of perceiving things and behaviours (Figurska & Sokol
2016).
Define the terms “incidental” and “explicit” learning and provide an example relating to
each term.
Incidental learning refers to any learning that is unplanned or unintended. This type of learning
is developed whilst learners engage in a task/activity. An example of an activity where incidental
learning is a reading activity, learners may accidently learn something new by reading a book or
even watching a video clip. Explicit learning on the other hand refers to a type of learning that is
intentional and requires a great deal of planning. Explicit learning usually takes place within a
structured and goal orientated lesson. The simplest example of explicit learning is rote counting,
rote counting requires the learners to simply repeat the specified information or in this case
numbers over and over again until it is learnt. I.e. multiplication tables.

1.2 Read the following case study and then answer the question below:

As a Foundation Phase teacher, you want to expose your learners to different genres
(i.e. types) of texts. You want a text that will present fun information, rather than one that
will present informative ideas in a fun way. In addition, you want text to include visual
illustrations to assist your learners in understanding the information presented to them.
Write a short story of at least three paragraphs that you could read to your Grade 1 class
based on the above case study. It should have:

(i) an introduction (4)
(ii) a body (6)
(iii) a conclusion (4)

Once upon a time on a hot summer’s day a girl named Lilly was out with her mum on the town.
Lilly’s mum had promised her that today she will be allowed to pick her very own first pet today,
but first there was a few things that needed to get done before getting to visit her pet. Lilly
waited the entire day to go to see if they would be able to go get her pet and eventually after
waiting around, it was time, so off they went to the local Rescue centre where they found a
whole bunch of different types of animals.
When Lilly arrived at the rescue centre the first animals she wanted to see were the horses, Lilly
was certain she wasn’t interested in getting a boring old puppy. She wanted something great
and grand, like a horse. None of the horses seemed very appealing to her though so she moved
on to the other animals. She went through probably over 10 different animals, and none of them
were quite satisfying her needs. She saw cats, horses, pigs, sheep and even llamas, but none
of them were for her. The last alternative she had was to look at the puppies, Lilly walked in the
kennels where all the puppies you could think of were waiting. None of these puppies interested
Lilly because from the moment she entered the room there was one lonesome puppy at the
back of the room sitting all by itself that had captured her attention. This puppy was tiny and had
absolutely nothing special about it but it was the one. Lilly went up to the tiny, white and brown
pup and called for it. The pup came running and it was as if it knew Lilly would be her forever
owner.
