Texts are written with a specific purpose in mind which may be to provide entertainment, offer information, persuade, or describe something, for example. To achieve the purpose, the author will use a specific style and tone to achieve the intended meaning or message of the text. The purpose of text is also linked to the target audience thereof. For example, texts targeted at teenagers will make use of informal language which contains slang or popular language terms which is understood by the audience and identified with. The diction used in texts include the choice of words, the type of language, and the register. Style of texts are determined by the use of the language and language devices applied in the text such as tone, allusion, personification, imagery, and puns, for example. Text C will be analysed to understand how the structure, audience, tone and style are applied to achieve the purpose thereof. The purpose of the text is determined by asking what the author or speaker aims to accomplish through the text. The genre of the text will help outline the purpose. Text C is an article in which the author compares ideas and take a position in terms of what is said. Thus, aiming to persuade the reader of the perspective or viewpoint taken. Text C informs us that Texas has begun to experience load shedding amidst “dangerous” and “cold” weather because of being unable to meet energy demands. The author compares load shedding in South Africa, with that in Texas, USA and outlines the differences and similarities thereof. The text indicates the difference in terminology used for “load shedding” and outlines the irony of some expats who tried to escape load shedding, who are now experiencing it in Texas. The text aims to persuade the reader that the rest of the world is not immune to load shedding and that the grass is not always greener on the other side.
