Traditional Work Design
Not many theories have had an enduring and worldwide impact on
management thought and management practice. Frederick Winslow Taylor
and Henry ford broke the stagnant management practices and brought
radical changes in this field. One may argue that these changes are no
longer relevant but I seem to differ. I believe that the present corporal
functions stem from these theories only. Theories propounded after the
industrial revolution in 1840 firm a strong base for developing and
improving corporal theories today. Our age isn't the same as the age of
Scientific Management but definitely an improvisation of it.
The period 1880-1910 saw rapid industrial changes and the creation of first,
large corporations in the US. Work processes were becoming complex and
new technologies were emerging. A lot of effort was needed to direct the
workers in these new factories. These workers were from Europe and
agricultural regions of America with little knowledge of English or job skills.
Owners indirectly employed workers through gang workers, gang
bosses who paid and disciplined them. In such a backdrop, Frederick Taylor
and Henry Ford proposed their ideas of rationalism, which was based on
sound reasoning.
