Required Materials
1. Textbook: Organic Chemistry by Brown and Foote, 8th edition (5 th to 7th editions are also acceptable). This class
does not use the OWL component that is often bundled with the textbook. This means you can buy the textbook
separately without paying extra for OWL.
2. Laboratory Manual: Microscale Organic Chemistry Experiments (I) by Dr. Chui Hwang. The lab manual is
NOT available at the EVC Student Bookstore. It is only available in the CHEM12A Canvas course webpage.
3. Molecular Model Kit.
4. Scientific Calculator (non-programmable): You will not be allowed to use your cell phone.
5. Canvas Access to Course: There is an online webpage for this course. It will contain online homework
assignments. It will also contain your scores for all assignments. On the webpage, you’ll also find PDF files of the
syllabus, lecture presentations, lab presentations, etc. Please visit https://virtual.evc.edu/ and learn about Canvas if
you are not familiar with this online learning platform.
6. A computer with webcam and microphone and the following minimum requirements:
 *Basically, you need a computer that is no older than 10 years. If you don’t have a good, functional
computer, then you must immediately go to this website and borrow an EVC laptop for the semester.
https://virtual.evc.edu/ and https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/50b0f3fa8b184abdbe34236c8160723d
 Processor: Dual core 2 GHz or higher
 Memory: 4 GB or more
 Graphic card: Intel HD 3000 / GeForce 6800 GT / Radeon X700 or higher
 OS: Latest version of Windows (64-bit) or Mac OS or Chrome OS.
 Supported browsers: Latest version of Google Chrome and Firefox.
 A stable internet connection.
 (Needed for Labster’s lab simulations, Proctorio-linked exams, and online lectures via Zoom
sessions.)

Online Course Format
1. Lecture meetings are held online using Zoom videoconferencing software. Students will be provided with a link
for these lecture meetings via e-mail. The link will also be posted on the course’s Canvas webpage.
2. Lab meetings are held online using Zoom videoconferencing software.
3. Lab assignments will consist of online simulation labs provided by Labster.com and pHEt Interactive
Simulations. (All virtual labs will be provided free of charge.)
4. Exams will be proctored using Proctorio software. Students are advised to make sure that they have an adequate
computer system (with webcam and microphone) and access to stable Internet connection.

, COURSE INFORMATION
Prerequisite: Satisfactory (C or higher) completion of one semester of Chemistry 1B.

Course Description: Chemistry 12A is a study of the fundamentals of Organic Chemistry with emphasis on molecular
structure, reaction mechanisms and kinetics, and spectroscopy. Microscale laboratory includes methods of isolation,
purification and identification of organic compounds as well as computer-interface, and instrumental methods used to
elucidate molecular structure. The course includes an online component. This 5.00 credit course is required for university-
bound majors, chemical engineering majors, most biology majors, and pre-medical and pre-dental students.
Course Content: Covers: Ch.1, Covalent Bonding and Shapes of Molecules; Ch.2, Alkanes and Cycloalkanes; Ch.3,
Stereoisomerism and Chirality; Ch.4, Acids and Bases; Ch.5, Alkenes – Bonding, Nomenclature, and Properties; Ch. 6,
Reactions of Alkenes; Ch.7, Alkynes; Ch.8, Haloalkanes, Halogenation, and Radical Reactions; Ch.9, Nucleophilic
Substitution and ß-Elimination; Ch.10, Alcohols; Ch.11, Ethers, Epoxides, and Sulfides; Ch. 12, Infrared Spectroscopy;
Ch. 13, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.
Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Employ the scientific method of testing, observing, and drawing conclusions through inductive and deductive
reasoning
2. Apply the 3-D nature of organic molecules to study major organic reactions including descriptions of reaction
kinetics, mechanisms, and stereochemistry of products.
3. Describe the theoretical and experimental aspects of common organic laboratory techniques for separation,
purification and compound characterization
4. Compare and contrast major classes of organic compounds in their physical and chemical properties by
application of bonding theories, intermolecular forces, steric and electronic forces
5. Apply physical spectroscopic theories and laboratory techniques for compound elucidation.
Academic Honesty Policy: All of the following are violations of the Academic Honesty Policy of Evergreen Valley
College. As part of the academic honor code, you are expected not engage in such activities, as well as discourage
others from doing so. If you let someone copy your work, then your assignment will be treated the same as that of the
copier. Academic Honesty is violated by any of the following:
• copying, in part or in whole, from another student’s test, quiz, etc.
• submitting work previously presented or to be presented in another course,
• submitting work that is not your own for credit in a course,
• using or consulting during an examination sources or materials not authorized by the instructor,
• altering or interfering with grading or grading instructions,
• resubmitting an altered, graded exam or assignment for additional credit,
• taking an exam for another student or having another student take an exam for you,
• plagiarizing–copying sentences, phrases, or passages from sources without proper citation.

Academic dishonesty may result in disciplinary action and may lead to suspension or dismissal. If you are unsure
whether a particular activity is a violation, check with your instructors, and don’t let others get away with cheating you
by allowing them to cheat on their course work. Report suspected violations to your instructors. Cheating is serious
business and should be tolerated by neither students nor faculty.
