Answer the following items shown below. Answers can be computerized (font style Arial with
font size 11) or hand-written. The document size should be A4 and in PDF format.
1. What is a microprocessor? Describe or explain in your own words. (5 pts.)
Microprocessor is the main part of a computer where it is similar to our human brain,
it can be trained to do anything. It can be programmed to do anything we want
based on its instruction set and capabilities which incorporates core functions of a
computer’s central processing unit (CPU).
2. Explain the difference between a microprocessor and a microcomputer. (5 pts.)
Microprocessor is a semiconductor device consist on electric circuit based on LSI or
VLSI technic. In microprocessor memory connected externally so it can be used for
large program. On the other hand, Microcomputer is a small, relatively inexpensive
computer. It was designed around a microprocessor, smaller than a minicomputer or
a mainframe.
3. Describe the functions of the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU). (5 pts.)
ALU is stands for arithmetic and logical unit which performs all arithmetic operations
like addition, subtraction, division and multiplication and logical operations of the
computer system. It works the coordination of control unit and memory unit. It is the
building block of CPU. It takes the logical decision like true/false as computers only
works on 0 and 1, which means false or true.
4. Give five different applications of microprocessors and describe how they
are used in each application. (5 pts.)
Control:
Microprocessor based controllers are available in home appliances, such as
microwave oven, washing machine etc., microprocessors are being used in
controlling various parameters like speed, pressure, temperature etc. These are used
with the help of suitable transduction.
Communication:
Microprocessors are being used in a wide range of communication equipment. In
telephone industry, these are used in digital telephone sets. Telephone exchanges
and modem etc.
Instrumentation:
Very useful in the field of instrumentation. Frequency counters, function generators,
frequency synthesizers, spectrum analyses and many other instruments are
available, when microprocessors are used as controller. It is also used in medical
instrumentation.
