(B) Community Health Nursing Diagnosis Statement
Increased risk of Covid-19 infection among those 60 years of age and older R/T knowledge
deficit of preventative measures such as hand hygiene, social distancing, avoiding crowded
areas, and early identification of symptoms through screening, as evidenced by an increase in
positive COVID-19 cases in the nursing home population of Erie County.
(B1) Health Inequity/Disparity
COVID-19 does not discriminate, as a person of any age can become infected. The
severity of the infection increases with chronic health conditions and age putting older adults at
higher risk for hospitalization and death. Residents who live in congregate facilities are even at a
higher risk of infection because of close living conditions. They rely on caregivers to utilize
infection prevention methods correctly. An article dated December 3 by Watson (2020) noted that
as of 3 weeks ago, there were three facilities with infection rates above 5%. Still, currently, nine
Erie County sites have a positive test rate of 5% or more.
(B1a) Primary community and Prevention Resources
In Erie County, the health department has advertised testing sites and prevention
strategies throughout the community via billboards, radio, and television advertisements. The
Erie County Department of Health has a website that lists Covid-19 information and resources.
These resources include testing, the COVID-19 Cluster Action Initiative, travel guidance,
community resources, and education on how COVID is spread and a link to the CDC
