Unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex
Sharing toys that aren’t washed
Your genitals coming into contact with your partners
Infected semen or vaginal fluid getting into your eye
Symptoms
Burning sensation during urination
Discharge from the penis or vagina (Yellow or green)
Pain in the lower abdomen
Pain in the testicles
Painful sexual intercourse in women
Treatments
Medication – Azithromycin and Doxycycline
Psychological – Counselling or see their GP, or attend support groups
Lifestyle Changes – Avoid having sex while infected, and using condoms
Impact of Individual
Physical – Abstain from sex while infected
Intellectual – Educated on sexual health, and how to manage their condition
Emotional – Embarrassed, worried about impact on fertility, feeling stressed, anxiety problems
Social – May become withdrawn from friends, and may isolate themselves, no sexual contact or
intimate contact until clear
Financial – People may have to buy such as medication or vaccinations
Impacts on Family
Physical - constant support through taking their course of medication.
Intellectual - Might not be able to concentrate at work
Emotional - upset and sympathy
Social - Might take part in fundraising to help support their family member
