Classifications of medicines:
General Sales List:
- Can be purchased from a wide range of shops.
- Dose is controlled.
- Considered to be reasonably safe.
Pharmacy Only:
- Sold at pharmacies under the supervision of a pharmacist.
- Some medicines may be sold only when certain criterias have been met.
Prescription Only Medicine:
- Usually obtained on the authorisation of a valid prescription.
- Registered prescribers → doctors, dentists, specialist nurses, pharmacists.
Controlled Drugs:
- Some are controlled under the misuse of drugs legislation.
- Ask for proof when being collected.
- Stricter legal controls apply to controlled meds to prevent them from being misused.
Complementary/Homoeopathic:
- System of medicine which includes treating the individual with highly diluted
substances with the aim of triggering a system of healing.
