Tissue Engineering
Medical Engineering involves applying various engineering concepts alongside
biology and medical design concepts for various treatment purposes. The field majorly
focuses on reducing the principal difference gaps between engineering and medicine. The
process involves a combination of problem-solving techniques from that of fields and design
concepts to formulate advanced healthcare systems and treatment Technics such as therapy
and diagnosis of various infections. Recent developments have resulted in new techniques
being formed in the field due to a combination of the two strategies, for instance, tissue
engineering. Therefore, this study focuses on providing literature about tissue engineering,
the developmental process, and its significance to the patients. The study begins by defining
tissue engineering and providing its history of development. Further literature is provided
about the significance of tissue engineering and why there existed motivations for
development of the concept. Finally, the study illustrates the techniques and the guiding
principles upon which the success of tissue engineering is based.
Tissue engineering is characterized by being multidisciplinary in its application. It
employs physical signals (like mechanical loading), biomaterial, cells, and biochemicals (like
growth factors) along with possible mixtures to create tissue-like structures (Guo & Ma,
2018). The main purpose of tissue engineering is to assist in generating biological substitutes
for damaged organs (Dong et al., 2020). The substitutes are purposed with monitoring,
restoring, and improving the functionality of various tissues. Despite the development, the
initial tissue-engineered skin products being presented in the late 1970s, modern tissue
engineering was successfully applied in 1987. Pieces of evidence have suggested that the
application of prosthesis was first applied in the ancient Egyptian civilization. The prosthesis
included a wood replacement for limbs and toes and gold for teeth. However, these
treatments were founded on non-living things that would attempt to substitute the lost organ's
