Course Description:
This course provides the student with knowledge and skill in the area of health assessment
across the lifespan. Content will focus on interviewing, the health history, mental status,
cultural beliefs and values, physical assessment of body systems, and will include
transcultural considerations. Assessment of the family, as well as domestic violence
screening and assessment are incorporated.

Course Objectives:
On completion of this course, the student will develop further knowledge, understanding
and skill in:
1. obtaining a comprehensive health history, including psycho-socio-cultural-spiritual
assessment.
2. performing a systematic physical examination.
3. describing normal findings across the lifespan, cultures, and races.
4. differentiating between normal and common abnormal findings or differentiating
between normal findings and those that require further investigation.
5. assessing the impact of individual situations on the family dynamic and the impact
of the family dynamic/situation on the individual.
6. developing personal health descriptions and nursing diagnoses and an initial plan of
care.

Teaching Methodology:
Internet delivery, laboratory practice, case studies, discussions, demonstrations, and
simulations, CD- ROM.

Each CNUR 816/ NUR 816 section will be supported by a D2L course shell.

Scheduled Hours: 4 hours/ week for 12-week delivery.

Course Deliveries:
For Students Registered in the Full-time Program taking NUR 816 via day school:
• Each student has been assigned to
• a 2-hours weekly “Health Assessment (Lecture)” on Tuesdays 1000-1200.
and
• a 2-hour weekly “Health Assessment (Laboratory)”on
Mondays.

The Weekly 2-hour “Health Assessment (Lecture)”:
• The weekly 2-hour “Health Assessment (Lecture)” sessions are scheduled times to
allow students to work through weekly identified case studies/discussion questions/
simulations prior to the lab.
• Students are expected to come to the lab having worked through these posted
weekly elements.
• Week 7: The Midterm test will be written online on Tuesday, Nov 1, in class,
with a start time of 1010.
• The End of Term Test: students can choose one of the following options:
1. Students will be offered the option of writing the End of Term Test
during week 11 of the course on Tuesday November 29, in class, with
a start time of 1010.
OR
2. Students will be offered the option to write the End of Term Test during
the Fall Examination Period as scheduled by the University.

Students will need to identify if they are taking option #1 by week 10 of
course.

The Weekly 2-hour “Health Assessment (Laboratory)”:
• Weeks 1-10: each week you will have a lab session as scheduled.
• Only students registered in the identified section will be permitted to attend each of
the lab section. Please note students are unable to request changes in the times of the
lab sections.
• There is no recording of any lab sessions.
• Please ensure you have watched the required weekly videos and completed all of
the required readings prior to attending the weekly lab.
• Weeks 11 and 12 will be reserved for Head to Toe Testing times.

• Weeks 11; 12: The Head to Toe Tests will be completed in person, during weeks
11 and 12.
• By end of week 2, the instructor will post the list of available dates and
times for students to take the Head to Toe test.
• Students are required to provided their preferred requests in Lab week 3.
• The dates and times for the tests will be will be posted by the end of week 4.
