Risk Assessment Case Study
Xander L. is an African American male and is documented as being a gang member.
Xander L. has priors which include purse snatching, breaking and entering, and drug possession.
Xander’s first juvenile adjudication took place when he was thirteen year’s old and he has served
a year in custody at a juvenile correctional facility. Not only has he served a year in custody, but
he also has been placed on probation twice.
Xander’s most recent arrest is for possession of a concealed weapon; Xander has pleaded
guilty to the chargers. Xander resides with his mother in a housing project and has no contact
with his father. His mother works two jobs in order to make ends meet. Xander states he has a
good and close relationship with his mother, he also states his mother does not approve of his
behavior; she has reported him to the police in the past. Xander further states he would like to
earn his high school equivalency diploma so his mother would be proud of him.
Juvenile Process
When a juvenile is arrested and found guilty there are slight variations when compared to
an adult who is arrested and found guilty. In the case of Xander L. who is a minor is found guilty
on the charges of possession of a concealed weapon he will be arrested, charged, and detained;
but most likely will be released or perhaps transported to a diversion program for juveniles.
Xander will be assigned an intake officer who will evaluate and diagnose the case and who will
make recommendations in regards to dismissing the case or having Xander case be handle in an
informal or formal manner. The judge will decide if the case will be sent to trial.
Juveniles are in a secure environment while awaiting their detention hearing; this
normally takes 24 hours after the arrest has been made. In most cases if the juvenile seems as if
they are a threat to others or themselves the possibility of being detained is greater. According to
