Analyze and Connect
1. What is the Question 1 2011 exam prompt asking students to do?
The prompt is asking students to write an essay tat focuses on how the poet
conveyed the father and son’s complex relationship using literary devices.
2. Write a thesis statement in response to the Question 1 2011 exam prompt.
A very complicated relationship that is very difficult to grasp is the relationship
between father and son. The feelings that a father expresses are very different
from any other kind of affection. As the greatest man alive, a young boy looks up
to his dad. One day, a son wants to become just like his dad, because that's his
role model. The father's reaction is that he would do anything for his little boy, but
he displays little emotion. The silence in the story symbolizes the boy's love for his
father, which he only wants to hear his father talk about. The kid just wants to hear
his voice, and he'll be happy to talk to his dad. He doesn't want to tell his son or
know anything. But, because of his role model, the son never gives up on his
father.
For the remaining questions in this section, you will make connections
between “A Story” (Question 1 from 2011 exam) and “Myth of Music”
(Question 1 from 2017). You can revisit “Myth of Music” in the previous lesson
if you need a refresher of the poem.
