ASSIGNMENT 1
SEMESTER 1
2023
, TRL3708 assignment 1 2023
1.1. Three technological systems that may offer both opportunities and
disruption at takelot.com are autonomous vehicles and the Internet of Things
(IoT), artificial intelligence and “Uberization.
Internet of Things
The IoT offers opportunities throughout the supply chain to monitor production
equipment, transportation equipment, demand, and inventory level without
requiring labor time and expertise. In the case of both autonomous vehicles
and IoT, the implication is that supply chains will be able to meet increasingly
specialized demands with the increasing talent shortage.
Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is an information-based technology that facilitates the
structuring of decision logic so that it can be automated and applied without
consuming the time of a subject matter expert. In the supply chain context, AI
applications could include forecasting, production scheduling and formulation,
inventory management, equipment repair, and vehicle and truck routing. With
the increasing complexity involving the interaction between supply chain
technology and supply chain talent, AI facilitates the capture and extension of
subject matter expertise.
Uberization
Uberization refers to the application of an Uber-type taxi system for freight.
Traditionally, freight has been hauled using private, contract, or common
carriage, which means that the carrier provides transportation service on a
structured basis in a number of ownership formats. In most cases,
transportation formats attempt to consolidate small shipments as much as
possible to achieve economies of scale.
As in the passenger application, applying the Uber concept to freight allows
for more customized delivery of smaller shipments. As an example, both
brick- and-mortar retailers and online retailers are using Uber-type
