Alternating current (AC) is a type of electrical current that periodically reverses direction, flowing first in one direction and then in the opposite direction. Unlike direct current (DC), which flows in only one direction, AC is used to transmit electricity over long distances, making it the dominant form of electricity used in power grids around the world. AC power is produced by generators, which convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, and is then distributed to homes and businesses through transformers and power lines. To effectively work with AC, one must have a basic understanding of its properties and behavior, including its voltage, frequency, and phase relationships. Through studying alternating current, electrical professionals and hobbyists can gain insights into the principles of electricity, and develop the skills to design, troubleshoot, and optimize AC electrical systems.
