Difference between criminology and criminal justice
Criminology is the systematic study of crime. Crime is broad and complex (Mitchell et
al., 2015). This discipline studies everything related with crime, from criminals to rehabilitation
of criminals. It studies types of crimes, and consequence of each type of crime. Moreover, it
studies what causes crime including the criminal behavior and how the society responds to
crime. Criminologists also study how investigations are carried out and the different models of
investigation. Fundamentally, criminology heavily borrows from social sincere disciplines such
as political science, sociology, psychology, law, forensic science and history (Mitchell et al.,
2015). For this reason, criminology can be considered to be multi-disciplinary. Criminology
students study the sociological nature of crime as well as criminal psychology in order to gain
full understanding of crime. More importantly, criminologists seek to understand the nature of
crime and how crime develops. They use he knowledge acquired here to develop procedures and
policies that can appropriately respond to crime. Criminology also extends to the study of
individual’s deviant behavior, substance abuse, juvenile justice system and intervention
strategies.
Criminal justice is the systematic study of the processes involved in handling crime. This
is how the society responds to crime. This entails, law enforcement, crime investigation, trial and
sentencing of criminals and rehabilitation of the convicted criminals (Mitchell et al., 2015). It is a
long process. This discipline studies the stages involved in criminal proceedings, from arrest and
investigations to corrections. It also studies the law enforcement institutions such as courts and
correction facilities that are involved in criminal justice system. Criminal justice experts also
