Nursing Informatics and the Nurse Informaticist
Nursing informatics is a nursing specialty that has continued to evolve over the years. It
integrates nursing science with varieties of information and analytical sciences in order to
identify, manage and also communicate data, knowledge, information and wisdom in the nursing
practice (Health Information and Management Systems Society, 2019). Nursing informatics
helps the nurses offer patient-centered and evidence-based care, enhance human health and also
advance medical research. Therefore, every healthcare facility needs to embrace nursing
informatics.
A nurse informaticist offers support to the nurses, patients, consumers, interprofessional
team in healthcare and other stakeholders in their process of decision-making and settings in
order to attain the desired outcomes (Menkiena, 2021). The support granted by the nurse
informaticists is accomplished by utilization of information structures, technology and processes.
In other words, the nurse informaticists are in charge of managing and implementing the
technology initiatives in order to help improve the efficiency of clinical workflow (Garcia-Dia,
2019). This translates to improved care for the patients and more benefits for the facility. It is
important to note that the role of a nurse informaticist has continued to evolve since the function
it initially had. There are varieties of roles that nurse informaticists have. One of the roles is to
understand the new processes and communicate it and the reason behind it (Menkiena, 2021).
These are communicated to the key stakeholders and the nursing staff. The nurse informaticist is
equipped with the knowledge needed to understand the processes in the program and thus, can
