Review for Unit Test
1. Be sure that you are familiar with the safety rules and WHMIS symbols in the Appendix on pages 747-
752 of your text.
2. What are the S.I. base units of length, mass, time, and volume?
3. Fill in the following chart. Practice doing the unit conversions below the chart. (Remember, the
exponent goes on the base unit!)
Prefix Abbreviatio Exponent a) 3s to ms
n ms-3s x 1 ms= 3 x 10e3 ms
10e-3s
micro 10e-6
b) 51kg to mg
Mega M 106 mg=51kg x 10e3 g x 1 mg. = 51 x 10e6 or 5.1 x 10e7mg
deci d 10e-1 1 kg 10e-3 g
milli m 10e-3 c) 7us to ms
ms= 7 us x 10e-6s x 1 ms = 7 x 10e-3 ms
kilo k 10e3 1um 10e-3s
centi c 10-2 d) 1cm/ms to m/s
m= 1cm x 10e-2m x 1ms = 1 x 10e1m/s
s 1ms 1cm 10e-3s
4. You will be given the formula d=m/v for density calculations of your quiz. Be sure that you can
manipulate the formula to solve for mass or volume if asked! Practice the following questions.
a) A 4.00 ml chunk of boron has a mass of 9.19g. What is the density?
U=1 X CF but NO CONVERSION NEEDED since density is already in g/ml
U= D-M/V=g/ml=9.19g/4.00ml = 2.30 g/ml. (HINT: 3 SF)
b) An iron bar has a mass of 225g. If iron’s density if 7860mg/L, what volume does the bar
occupy?
U=I X CF where density is the CF (D=m/v/g/ml=7860mg/L. (HINT 3 SF)
L=225g x 1 L x 1 mg = 2.86 x 10e1 L. (3 SF)
7860 mg 10e-3 g
5. Be sure that you understand all of the significant figure and measurement rules. Do the following to
practice.
a) How many sig. figs? 3570 3 125.70 5 3.00 3
b) 2.11 x 0.0024 =0.0051 2 sf
c) 0.02 + 344.311 =344.33 2 dp
d) (3.6 x 9.02) + 13.923 =46.4 1 dp Hint:BEDMAS
(2 sf & 1 dp)
