, The Endocrine System
▪ Second controlling system of the body
▪ Nervous system is the fast-control system
▪ Uses chemical messengers (hormones) that are
released into the blood
▪ Hormones control several major processes:
▪ Reproduction
▪ Growth and development
▪ Mobilization of body defences
▪ Maintenance of homeostasis
▪ Regulation of metabolism

, The Endocrine System
▪ The endocrine system goes along with the nervous
system, coordinates and directs the activity of the
body’s cells. Nervous is fast “built for speed”and
runs through the nerves and uses nerve impulses
while endo is slow and runs through the
bloodstream and uses chemical messengers called
hormones; mobilization of body defenses against
stressors, homeostasis: maintains electrolyte, water
and nutrient balance of the blood; regulating cellular
metabolism and energy balance

▪ Neurotransmitters released by neurons
▪ Hormones release by endocrine glands
