Heart Pulmonary artery
Muscular pump covered in fibrous tissue, sheath (pericardium)
-
Pulmonary vein
within which there's a lot of fluid
Functions to pump blood throughout the body
Located in the thorax, nestled into the left side of the thorax
Comprised of 4 chambers and great vessel right pulmonary artery is
larger than the left one
Vascular circulation
System circulation Pulmonary circulation
- Movement of blood between the heart and the rest of the body - Movement of blood between the heart and the lungs
- Provides the functional supply of blood to the tissues of the body - Functions to shunt deoxygenated blood from
- Supplies tissue with oxygenated blood towards the lungs to be oxygenated
- Left side of the heart to the rest of the body (oxygenated) - Right side of the heart to lungs (deoxygenated)
- Rest of the body to the right side of the heart (deoxygenated) - Lungs to left side of the heart (oxygenated)
Blood vessels
Vessels have 3 anatomical layers
- Tunica intima
- Tunica media it has smooth muscle which keeps integrity of the vessel well
- Tunica externa (adventitia)
Large arteries have smaller blood vessels lining the adventitia - supplies the wall of the
large artery with blood
Veins
Arteries - Carry deoxygenated blood away from tissues towards the heart*
- Carry oxygenated blood towards tissues from the heart* - Lower pressure vessel
- Higher pressure vessel -Thin walls, they are collapsible
- Thicker walls -Peripheral veins have valves so that the blood won't return
- Media layer is large
-More pigmented - darker colour
* With few exceptions
