, Application of Remote Sensing
Introduction
Various type of forest present in the world. These forests are supporting large amount of
biodiversity with their distribution determined by topography, climatic conditions, and soil
structure. Forest as renewable natural resource that benefit the country’s economic sector and
improve environmental and social health. Forest gave many benefits like food, shelter,
medicines, and major role of sinking harmful gases from atmosphere. In last few decades, 47%
of land was covered by forest and supported many species which are now extinct from world.
But now round about 30% of forest is remaining in globe due to different factors. Decrease in
biomass of above ground is because of mortality of tree by droughts, wildfire, logging, or
clearing.
Environmental depletion begins by decaying of natural resources for human needs. Population
growth need a land for fulfilling basic requirements and then human cut the forest down to build
an infrastructure and economic growth which results in significant increase in greenhouse gases.
Managing forest with a sustainability is creating a balance between human demand and
ecological function maintenance for healthy forest ecosystem. Method through which forest data
is being collected to get information for analysis and assessment in less time and with accuracy is
essential for modern requirement. Data for analysis include volume, growth, mortality, removals,
forest health.
Techniques required to monitor the forest inventory for forest resource variables. Economic
sector, environmental depletion, and social policy objectives are being a cause of change in
management techniques for a better access of information. Recent research has focused on
species characterization, tree size, diameter distribution, and issues evaluation that impact the
cost and efficiency of area-based approach.
Radar systems were examined for global mapping over the last few decades; however, many
organizations depend on remote sensing, which can indirectly indicate the amount of biomass
present. Satellite remote sensing technology is been efficiently used for mapping woody
vegetation cover, biomass, basal area, near ground vegetation, forest health, and stand age. It is
not possible to effectively, efficiently and equitability compensate the countries for reducing
their emissions.

Remote sensing technologies, support and their applicability
At national to international level, remote sensing technology is giving a great progress to
calculate the biomass of forests, through optical radar or light detection and ranging (LiDAR)
techniques. LiDAR have high capacity to give accurate data, when other RADAR or optical
sensor have low capacity to penetrate through canopy and response signals. But LiDAR is tenth
time more expensive than optical and RADAR.
