CHAPTER 5 AND 6

For chapters 5 and 6 I have written out the key debates below; these are just the titles in chapters 5
and 6. This is where the essay questions in the exam will come from (although expect them to be
written differently) For each write an essay plan – Overall argument, 3 paragraphs and what detail
you will include throughout.

a) How effectively did Edward IV re-establish himself as king?

EdIV regained throne in March 1471& kept it until his death in April 1483

 issued pardons & fines with nobles supported Lancastrians e.g. lord Stanley
 those loyal were rewarded, Hastings (captain of Calais) & W estates were shared between
Gloucester & Clarence (changed sides at battle of Barnet 1471)

Policy towards Wales

 1479 gave earldom of Pembroke to Huntingdon, set up a council of wales ( in Ludlow where
Ed’s son would live
 Council dealt with lawlessness & extended royal legal powers in the Marches as well in wales
 PoW household had men that had allegiance to the king& not Woodville’s
 Decline in lawlessness because of it

Policy towards north

 Chose bro Richard ( duke of Gloucester) & henry Percy [ both accompanied Ed to exile in
1471] to control north
 Ensured laws were kept & removal of HIV & son left no figure head

Policy towards Ireland

 No issues to begin with as they like York

b) How successful was Edward’s domestic policy in his second reign?

Heart of his own govt., improved efficiency by selecting men that were qualified / capable for the
job, continued to rely on nobility to keep order

 Council after 1471 saw increase in men of lower rank e.g. bishop Morton& William Parr, Ed
relied on them for judicial & policy decisions
 executed his brother Clarence for treason in 1478 as he continued to cause trouble, tackled
the problem of piracy
 some evidence suggests fewer men were being retained by the nobles in 1470 as the times
were peaceful and stable
 no major riots after 1471
 land revenue experiment developed further during his second reign which went the
chamber system of finance
 treaty of Picquigny 1475, received annual pension of 50,000 golden crowns
evidence of failure

 tolerated high levels of crime as long as it didn’t affect his goals, turned a blind eye to
corruption in the judicial system, ignored inheritance laws

,  viewed as weak due to the number of pardons, use of patronage & failure to tackle retaining

concluding thoughts

Overall Edward IV was extremely successful when it came to his domestic policy as when it came to
ruling he ensured that the people in his council and govt. where qualified for the position and could
get things down efficiently rather than letting what happened in henry VI’s govt.

Basically did what Henry should have done during his reign

By killing his own brother would have made people view him as ruthless and punishes anyone no
matter who they are making it less likely for people to rebel against him as Edward was willing to kill
his own blood.

c) How successful was Edward’s foreign policy in his second reign?

Treaty of cháteaugiron 1472 saw Brittany & England was gonna invade Gascony or Normandy but
Brittany signed a truce with France

 After treaty of London 1474 in 1475 he was let down with his allies when he arrived to Calais
 It had seemed to be his allies that let him down before 1475 there not reliable allies
 Treaty of Picquigny 1475, 10year truce, pension
 1482 lost French pension as Louis didn’t have to worry about Anglo- Burgundian alliance

Edward remained good terms with Scotland until 1480 as they share a land border making them a
threat so by them being on good terms Edward is no longer have to continuously watch out for
Scotland and focus on England’s other objectives

But by louis stirring things up they are no longer on good terms

against Scot was ill-judged

 Let his avarice (greed) to dominate his policy
 2nd reign characterized by peace & prosperity rather than continental wars
 outmaneuvered by Louis XI

Edward IV died April 1483

d) How did Richard become king in 1483?

Death

 had left throne to a minor (EdV was 12)
 will supposedly stated Gloucester would act as regent until heir came of age
