Lab Report; Coastal Processes and Sea-Level Rise in The New York City Area
Introduction
This lab main objective was to study how coastlines have been shaped by human
development and natural coastal processes in the New York city area. Understanding how human
civilization and natural coastal tactics have affected the coastline is the main objective. Also, the
study aims to look into the possible consequences of sea level upward push over the
approaching century.
Methods
I used the google earth pro to study the section of the beach between sandy hook beach
and Gunnison Brach by making three transects using the path tool from the middle of the
peninsula and extending into the ocean. I proceeded to investigate the elevation profiles and the
imagery to identify important morphological structures where I identified features such as
foreshore, surf zone, berm, backshore and dunes demonstrating the existence of a dynamic
coastal environment. In order to determine the rate of sea level increase, I also examined sea
level trend maps for Sandy Hook, The Battery, and Kings Point provided by NOAA. The trend
