1.3 Medical treatment for sentenced offenders which deals with
sick/medicine parade
“Taking into account local circumstances, a system must be established in each
correctional centre in terms of which an off ender has daily access to
nursing/medical services in an orderly and organised way.
All staff entrusted with handling medicines must ensure that they are fully
conversant with statutory provisions concerning the storage, issuing, administering
and recording of medicines.
Liquid medicines must be administered by means of a calibrated medicine
container to offenders/mothers’ infants/young children during medication parades.
In no circumstances may an off ender be permitted to handle medicine or to obtain
any medication in an unauthorised manner.
Off enders/infants/young children must swallow tablets/capsules, or any other
form of medication, in the presence of a correctional official/nursing staff member
and drinking water must be available. No medical complaint of any off
ender/infant/young child may be ignored” Muthaphuli et al (2015:39).
