Azygos vein
The azygos vein is a major vessel in the venous system, running parallel to the vertebral column on the right side of the body. It collects blood from the thoracic wall, esophagus, and mediastinum, serving as a crucial route for venous drainage. Originating from the posterior abdominal wall, it ascends through the chest, receiving blood from various tributaries, including the hemiazygos and accessory hemiazygos veins. Finally, it empties into the superior vena cava, contributing to the return of deoxygenated blood to the heart. The azygos vein's intricate network aids in maintaining proper blood circulation and systemic function.
