Portal vein
The portal vein is a crucial blood vessel in the abdomen that carries nutrient-rich blood from the digestive organs to the liver for processing and detoxification. It forms from the union of the superior mesenteric vein and the splenic vein behind the pancreas. Upon reaching the liver, the portal vein branches into smaller vessels, facilitating the delivery of nutrients and metabolic byproducts for filtration and storage. Dysfunction of the portal vein can lead to serious health complications, such as portal hypertension, which can result in varices, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy. Proper functioning of the portal vein is essential for maintaining overall metabolic health.
