Kidneys: maintain water and electrolyte balance
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH), aldosterone, and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) regulate
kidney function
Parts of the kidney
Conserve water by concentrating urine
- Osmolarity of blood 300 mOsm/L
- Osmolarity of urine 1,200 mOsm/L
Osmolarity: concentration of urine. Large value = concentrated, small value = dilute
ADH secretion, inadequate water intake, eating salty food, sweating => increases water
reabsorption
Aldosterone release, diarrhea, blood loss => increases Na+ and therefore water reabsorption
Diabetes insipidus, alcohol, caffeine => no increase in Na+ and water reabsorption
