- There are many methods on how you create words, but the most common way that people
create new words is using the existing ones and combining them that method is called
compounding. Another method is if you don’t want to combine two words together is
called affixation which involves adding prefixes or suffixes to already existing words that
combine them together to make a new word.

- Words are formed by the use of four kinds of word formation, this includes Prefixes,
suffixes, conversion and compounds.
C. How many new words are created everyday?
- 14.7 new words are created every single day, according to an estimate a new word is
created every 98 minutes.
D. What are some mechanisms in forming new words?
- The mechanisms in forming new words are:
1. Derivation - It is the most common method in creating new words, the method is to add a
prefix or suffix to an existing one.
2. Back Formation - It is the opposite of Derivation, it is the creation of a new root word
by the removal of a phantom affix.
3. Compounding - It is the combination or juxtaposition of two existing words. compound
words begin life as separate entities then get combined by sometimes a hyphen that
eventually becomes a single unit.
4. Repurposing - By taking a word from one context and applying it to another. In other
words, a single word can mean different things.
5. Conversion - By taking a word from one word class and transplanting it to another.
6. Eponyms - These are words that are named after a person or place.
7. Abbreviations - There are subtypes to abbreviations these are: clippings, acronyms, and
initialisms.
8. Loanwords - words taken/borrowed from another language.
9. Onomatopoeia - Creation of word by the use of imitation of the sound it is supposed to
make.
10. Reduplication - It is the repetition of a word or sound.
