Twelfth Night
In this piece, a scene from William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night will be modernized. The
scenes are presented as a play, with the action set in the present day. In this scenes, Viola,
disguised as a pageboy named Cesario, meets Orsino. In the original play, Orsino is obsessed
with Olivia, who has rejected him (Shakespeare, 2019). When Viola arrives, however, he finds
himself increasingly drawn to her.
Scene One
The contemporary scenario takes place at a restaurant in the metropolis. Orsino is sitting at a
table and contemplatively gazing out the window.
Orsino: (To himself) How can I win Olivia's affection? She is very aloof and inaccessible.
Viola enters the restaurant wearing a little pageboy-style hat, a spotless white button-down shirt,
and black slacks. She glances around the restaurant before locking eyes with Orsino.
Orsino: (Incredulous) Who are you?
Viola: (Bows) My name is Cesario, and I am at your service.
Orsino: (Smiles) The pleasure is all mine, Cesario. Please take a seat.
Viola occupies the seat opposite Orsino. Before Orsino speaks again, there is a lengthy,
uncomfortable pause.
Orsino: Cesario, I must admit that I am growing attracted to you.
Viola: (Smiles) Indeed?
Orsino: Yeah. Tell me, what brings you to this location?
Viola: I am seeking for someone, perhaps my master. He sent me here to deliver a message, but I
am uncertain to whom it is addressed.
Orsino: (Raising his eyebrows) Is that true?
