The anatomy of flowering plants (angiosperms) focuses on their structure at the tissue and cellular levels. Key components include: Tissues: Meristematic Tissue: Responsible for growth, found at tips of roots and shoots (apical meristems) and in lateral areas (lateral meristems). Permanent Tissue: Differentiated tissues that perform specific functions. It includes: Simple Tissue: Composed of similar cells, e.g., parenchyma (storage), collenchyma (support), and sclerenchyma (strength). Complex Tissue: Composed of different types of cells, e.g., xylem (water transport) and phloem (nutrient transport). Root Anatomy: Roots consist of the root cap, zone of cell division, zone of elongation, and zone of maturation, which are vital for anchorage and absorption. Stem Anatomy: Stems have nodes and internodes, with vascular bundles containing xylem and phloem, arranged differently in monocots and dicots. Leaf Anatomy: Leaves are made up of epidermis (protection), mesophyll (photosynthesis), and vascular tissue (transport). Flower Anatomy: Flowers consist of four whorls: sepals (protection), petals (attraction), stamens (male reproductive), and carpels (female reproductive). Understanding these structures helps explain the physiological functions of flowering plants, including growth, reproduction, and adaptation to their environments.
