, ABSTRACT
The aim of the present work is to investigate some
phytochemical constituents, nutritional values, extractable matter
contents and qualitative determination of some elements of
leaves of Senna alata L., (Mezali-gyi). The phytochemical
constituents of dried powdered sample of Mezali-gyi were
determined by test tube method. According to the preliminary
phytochemical investigation, alkaloids, α-amino acids,
carbohydrates, flavonoids, glycosides, organic acids, phenolic
compounds, reducing sugars, saponins, starch, steroids, tannins
and terpenoids were present and cyanogenic glycosides was
absent in the sample. Some nutritional values of the sample such
as moisture (2.0%), ash (4.21%), protein (12.95%), fibre (1.23%),
fat (8.25%), carbohydrate (71.36%) and energy value (411.45
kcal/100g) were determined by AOAC methods. 3
, Some extractable matter contents of Mezali-gyi in EtOH, PE,
EtOAc, H2O and MeOH were observed to be 26.29 %, 8.23 %,
12.06 %, 35.44 % and 35.83 %, respectively. This indicated that
polar components are rich in Mezali-gyi sample. Some elements
of Mezali-gyi leaves such as K, Ca, S, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Sr
were detected by EDXRF method and their relative abundance
were found to be 18.62%, 74.77%, 2.52%, 2.63%, 0.47%,
0.29%, 0.34% and 0.34% respectively. On silica gel column
chromatographic separation from EtOAc crude extract of leaves
of Senna alata L., compound A (16.8 mg, 0.56 % yield) and
compound B (11.9 mg, 0.39 % yield) were isolated. These
isolated compounds were identified by some physicochemical
characterization and FTIR spectroscopic method. Antimicrobial
activity of various crude extracts such as EtOH, PE, MeOH,
EtOAc and H2O were determined against eight microorganisms
such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus pumilis,
Candida albicans, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Staphylococus
aureus, Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Micrococcus luteus by 4
