Ankle Sprain
It is the term used for ligament injuries of the ankle. Commonly, it is an inversion injury and the
anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) is most commonly injured, followed by the the
calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). Sprains of both the ATFL and CFL are a result of a combined
inversion and plantarflexion mechanism.
It is a common injury among active individuals with an estimated incidence of 61 per 10000 each
year. It accounts for up to 30% of sports injuries.
