Introduction to Poetry

, Course Description
1.Course description: The course aims to familiarise 3rd year undergraduate students to
poetry genre, through establishing a basic grammar of reading poems , and helping them
and appreciate a collection of poems. There poems are selected from the Renaissance and
century ( Shakespeare, John Donne) through the Romantic canon ( Wordsworth) to the Victor
Browning) period. The course is a preparation for a more advanced course in 20th century Poe
2. Course Objectives : Introducing students to some of the major approaches to reading
writing about poems ; Training them in the main poetic modes ( descriptive, lyrical, dram
and in poetic techniques ( diction, imagery , rhythm).
3. Course content: online course sessions with primary texts provided ; a hard copy of
textbook B.A. Phythian ed. Considering Poetry ( 1970) is necessary.
4. Course evaluation: Written exam
