get to hear people’s incredible stories narrated by me. Today’s episode is about Stella Grant and Will
Newman who both have a disease called cystic fibrosis – or more commonly known as CF.
CF is a genetic disease that affects the lungs, digestive system, and other organs severely. The cells
that create mucus, sweat, digestive fluids are affected by CF. These produced fluids are generally thin
and slippery, but in people with CF, they are thick and sticky. So instead of acting as lubricants, the
secreted fluids plug up the tubes, ducts and airways in your body, especially in the lungs and the
pancreas. In addition, CF is incurable. Cross-infection from certain bacteria strains is a huge risk for CF
patients. One touch can literally kill the both of them.
So the story is about 2 teenagers with CF dealing with first love and the uncertainty of their futures.
Stella is a well-organized achiever who has her life in order and manages her medications and
treatments efficiently. Stella's also a youtuber and she kind of vlogs her life as a CF patient, so she
vlogs her treatments and she updates on her state and so on.
Will, on the other hand, is the polar opposite. He's a rule-breaker who's had enough with drugs,
hospitalizations, and treatment trials for B. cepacia, the bacteria that's causing his CF to worsen.
When Stella and Will first meet on the CF ward, they dislike each other, but romance eventually
blossoms in true opposites-attract style. Stella is a total control freak so she eventually forces Will to
do his treatments properly, for his own wellbeing.
The bacteria that Will’s contracted is easily spreadable and drug-resistant, and it severely reduces the
already short lifespan of CF-patients. Because of this bacteria, he has to stay six feet away from other
patients on the ward. This is especially important for Stella, considering the fact that she is waiting
for a lung transplant.
A series of unfortunate and not so unfortunate events happened after Stella and Will started to know
each other.
Will started to do his treatments right.
Poe was also a CF’er, and was the first friend Stella made at the hospital, they fought CF together for
a decade. But he unfortunately died during the birthday party Stella organized for Will.
After this, Stella and Will decided to go outside, but their lungs couldn’t support the harshness of the
cold, and they both collapsed. With the little strength he still had, he did CPR, which resulted in him
also doing a mouth-to-mouth to try and save Stella. If you still remember I said that one touch can
literally kill the both of them. So just after that happened, they got the news that they found lungs
for Stella. They came to rescue them both and they brought them to the hospital.
Stella got new lungs and fortunately, she didn’t contract Will’s bacteria. Right after Stella woke up,
Will left to protect her and to live freely.
Eight months after Stella’s lung transplant, they saw each other by chance at the airport.
