,Introduction
Formula One is currently one of the most-watched motorsports in the world with an average
of 445 million viewers per race in 20211. Additionally, the sport attracts a large fan base,
gaining a revenue of $2.573 billion by the end of the 2022 season2. However as the world
becomes more and more aware of the impacts human activity has on the environment, the
sport may have to question their environmental impact. Industries can be easily scrutinized
for their contributions to carbon emissions and global warming, thus sports like Formula 1
have been pressured into reducing their carbon footprint and contribute to the mitigation of
climate change. F1 has set in place a goal for sustainability that would significantly transform
the world of motorsport, transitioning from a traditionally high-carbon emitting sport to one
of net zero, a goal to balance emissions produced with the amount removed from the
atmosphere.
With the net-zero mission in action, F1 is set to develop plans for technological
advancements in power units, the development of sustainable fuels, and countless carbon
offset plans, to limit their CO2 emissions, as in the 2019 season the championship emitted
more than 256,000 tons of CO23, thus by 2030, F1 aims to make it net zero. Such changes
may upset viewers as the sport must find a way to maintain its premier status as one of the
world's best motorsports and reduce its environmental impact at the same time.

In September 2022, three years after the Net-zero goal was introduced, Impakter released an
article criticising F1’s attempt to reduce the emissions produced through the logistics sector
alone. Impakter pointed out that F1’s 2023 calendar, with 24 races, is completely oxymoronic
to F1’s goal for sustainability. Moreover, with F1 making changes towards fuel efficiency, it
