1. My own fish bowl
My cultural background
I was born on November 14th 1999 in Vleuten and this is also the place where I
have been raised. Vleuten is a town nearby the city of Utrecht. Currently I am still
living here with my mother Joan, my father Ruud and my little sister Carmen. I

, grew up in a big loving typical Dutch family. My father was born in Brabant and
more than half of our family still lives there. We do not see each other very often
but when we see each other it is always nice. Happily my grandfathers and
grandmother live nearby in Vleuten. My grandfather likes to work out our family
tree. That is how I found out that the family of my father's side comes from
Austria and my mother's side from Haarzuilens.
Both of my parents were raised Roman Catholic. I was raised this way as well. We
always celebrate the holidays of Christianity like, Easter and Christmas. We used
to go to church every Sunday and I went to a Roman Catholic elementary school.
When I was a child I only came into contact with Christianity. In Vleuten this was
actually the only religion. The only difference was that there were Roman
Catholics and Protestants believers. Nowadays we actually never visit church
anymore.
My parents never forced me to believe. At the moment, I do almost nothing with
Christianity. But it has taught me important principles and referring to the
Sunrise model I think the religion has had an influence on my culture and my way
of thinking. My parents have always told me that you have to take care of the
people around you, maybe that is why my sister and I are both studying nursing.

Why are these values important to me?
While I am working and in my own personal life I think that health is an important
value. For myself I find it important that not only I but also the people around me
are healthy. Being healthy brings out the best in people. When you are healthy
you can do everything you want and you can do that with a lot of joy. For
example: when I am sick I do not feel well, not only physically but also mentally I
feel uncomfortable. Then I get focused on getting better and feeling good again.
A few years ago, I was very sick myself. Because of this I started to realize that
health is not something that goes without saying and that you are actually very
lucky when you are completely healthy. As a nurse I love to see a patient get
better. I think the beauty of being a nurse is that you can contribute to this
development.
Another personal value I really appreciate is love. For me love is my driving force.
From being loved I get so much positive energy to do things. It gives me power
and motivation. You can get love in different ways, for example from your family
or your friends. You take care of each other and help people where they need it
and that is also the way my parents raised me.
The last personal value I find valuable is gratitude. This is a value that has
developed more strongly with me lately. As I said before, I myself was sick for a
while 2 years ago. This period was very difficult for me because I couldn't do
anything anymore. That is why I have become very grateful for the things I am

1. My own fish bowl
My cultural background
