HEAD ANATOMY
SKULL AND FACE BONES
SKULL BONES
The function of the skull bones is to protect the brain and provide
attachment points for facial muscles.
The skull is made up of 8 bones: two parietal bones (located on the
upper and lateral portions of the skull), two temporal bones (located on
the lateral sides and the base of the skull), one frontal bone (located at
the front of the skull), one occipital bone (located at the back of the
head), one sphenoid bone (located at the base of the skull, behind the
nose), and one ethmoid bone (located between the orbits of the frontal
bone).

, FACIAL BONES
The function of the facial bones is to protect the organs of vision,
smell, and taste, as well as the nerves and blood vessels of the
face. They also provide attachment points for facial and chewing
muscles.
The face is made up of 14 bones:
Two pairs of bones that form the palatine bone (contribute to the
formation of the hard palate and the posterior part of the nasal
cavities),
One vomer (contributes to the formation of the nasal septum),
Two inferior nasal conchae (small bones located in the nasal
cavities),
Two zygomatic arches, also called malar bones (form the cheeks),
Two pairs of bones that form the upper jaw (maxilla) (contain the
upper teeth, located on either side of the nose, and extending to
the cheek area),
One lower jaw (mandible) (forms the lower mandible and is the
only movable bone of the face),
Two nasal bones (form the bridge of the nose),
And two lacrimal bones (located near the eyes, in the inner area of
the orbits).
