Religion mentions the relationship of love that an individual has with God, possessing
behavior that is consistent with what religion is agreeable with God, and ethics refers to the
gestures that individuals carry out based on their religion (Freixas & Abbott, 2018). The chosen

1. Joe and Mary considering IVF procedure after they have lost a child and are no longer
fertile. However, the IVF procedure is forbidden by their religion.
2. Jane Doe is eighteen, a lesbian, and is debating whether to tell her parents or not because
it is frowned upon by their religion.
What is the relation between ethics and religion? There is no scholarly consensus as to
the relationship between religion and ethics. On the one hand, some scholars agree with the
contention that ethics and religion provide support to each other. However, some scholars are
certain that both are independent of each other. Normally, there is a range of perspectives on the
relationship between religion and ethics. Both tend to be discussed in a way that provides little
room for compromise or practical solutions to everyday problems. The relationship between
religion and ethics is about the relationship between revelation and reason (Singer, 2011).
Religion is based on the idea that God reveals awareness about life and its true meaning.
Religion has a value structure that can guide believers to choose between right and wrong
(Freixas & Abbott, 2018). This suggests that, for many religious individuals, ethics and religion
are unable to be separated; for them, either ethics is part of the religion or their religion is their
morality (Freixas & Abbott, 2018). Ethics, from a strictly humanistic perspective, is built on the
principles of reason: Anything that is not rationally verifiable cannot be considered justifiable
