,LEUKEMIA
• Leukemia – ‘leuk’ – refers to WBC , and ‘emia’ refers to the Blood.
• Leukemias are malignant disorders of the WBC compartment, in which there’s
uncontrolled proliferation of partially developed WBC, (which is also called blast
cells ), that build up in the blood.
• Although, leukemia means cancer WBCs, it can also be used to refer to any of the
blood cells, including RBCs and Platelets.
, TERMINOLOGY AND CLASSIFICATION
• Leukemia are traditionally classified into
four main groups.
1. Acute Myeloid Leukemia ( AML )
2. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (
ALL )
3. Chronic Myeloid Leukemia ( CML )
4. Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (
CLL )
, PHYSIOLOGY OF HEMATOPOIESIS
• Every blood cell starts its life in the bone
marrow as a Hematopoietic stem cell.
• Hematopoietic stem cells are
multipotent – that they can give rise to
both cells. (i.e ) Myeloblasts and
Lymphoblasts.
1. Myeloblasts – precursors of myeloid
blood cells.
2. Lymphoblasts – precursors of
lymphoid blood cells.
