• Chronic renal failure, or ESRD, is a progressive,
irreversible deterioration in renal function in
which the body’s ability to maintain metabolic
and fluid and electrolyte balance fails, resulting
in uremia or azotemia

It is a progressive, irreversible loss of kidney
function for >3 months, as manifested by either:
1. Kidney damage, with or without decreased GFR.
2. GFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m2, with or without kidney
damage

Leading causes of ESRD
• Diabetes
• Hypertension
Othercauses include:
• Autoimmune disorders eg SLE and scleroderma
• Birth defects of the kidneys e.g polycystic
kidney disease
• Toxic chemicals
