Toph Beifong is a 12-year-old girl who grew up with her mother and father. She is an
earth bender, but is blind, so she was overprotected by her parents who did not want to see her
harmed. She now lives with her friends and guardians, Katara, Aang, and Sokka, who have been
teaching her braille. Katara stated that Toph often tries to get out of doing group chores and will
try to fight peers when a demand is placed on her. The target behavior is aggression towards
others. In this scenario, aggression towards others can be described as “in all situations, any time
Toph uses a part of her body or earth bending to make physical contact with others with the
intent of harming them. Examples of this would be using a closed fist to punch or foot to kick
, another individual. Nonexamples would include giving a fist bump or nudge to peers while
playing” (Gutierrez, 2023). The primary function of aggression behavior is escape according to
the FBA; however, a brief functional analysis was run for the FBA so other functions were not
tested.
The selected procedure that will be taught to the trainee will be the prompt hierarchy.
Since Toph is blind, the trainee will start by learning how to use physical prompting to teach
positive behaviors. As Toph begins to respond to this prompt, the trainee will implement verbal
prompts until Toph is independently able to ask for an alternative when a demand is placed. One
reason why the trainee will learn to use most-to-least prompting is because this method allows
for the trainee to gradually transfer stimulus control from the prompt to the natural stimuli, which
would be the demand and allows for the prompt to be moved to more restrictive or less
restrictive based on how Toph responds so it can be catered to her needs (Cooper et al., 2019).
The second reason why the trainee will start on most-to-least prompting is because of the
potential damage she can cause. Toph is an earth bender and likes to fight so this could put her
peers in harm’s way if the prompting is not to a level that she can understand and respond safely.
