-prevention of nausea and vomiting through blocking of dopamine in the
chemoreceptor trigger zone of the medulla
•complications:
-anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, photophobia, urinary hesitancy
or retention, constipation, tachycardia
-epses (acute dystonia, pseudoparkinsonism, bradykinesia, rigidity, shuffling gait,
drooling, tremors, akathisia, td, involuntary movements of the tongue and fac, such
as lip smacking and tongue fasciculations, involuntary movements of the arms, legs,
and trunk, neuroendocrine effects, gynecomastia, weight gain, menstrual
irregularities, nms, orthostatic hypotension, sedation, seizures, severe dysrhythmias,
sexual dysfunction, skin photosensitivity, contact dermatitis, liver impairment)
•contraindications/precautions:
-these medications are contraindicated in clients who are in a coma or have
parkinson's disease, liver damage, or severe hypertension
-contraindicated an older adult client to have dementia
-use cautiously in clients who have prostate enlargement, heart disorders, kidney
disease, or seizure disorders
•interactions:
-anticholinergic meds (will increase levels)
-additive effects with cns depressants
-levodopa counteracts effects
-Long-acting injectable
-Lasts up to 2 to 4 weeks
-good for noncompliant patients
