1. certified: A title given when a person has shown that he or she has met
requirements based on knowledge of certain facts
2. clinical practice guideline (CPG: A statement that includes
recommendations designed to provide optimal care; depends on the
paramedic's ability to select which aspects of care are appropriate for the
particular patient situation.
3. continuous quality improvement (CQI): A system of internal and external
reviews and audits of all aspects of a paramedic service
4. direct medical control: Medical direction given in real time to an EMS service
or paramedic
5. emergency medical services (EMS): A health care system designed to bring
immediate on-scene prehospital care to those in need along with transport to a
definitive medical care facility.
6. health care professional: A person who follows specific professional
attributes that are outlined in this profession.
7. indirect medical control: Medical direction given through a set of protocols,
policies, and/or standards
8. licensed: Similar to certified, a person who has shown a degree of
competency in a specific occupation and is granted ability to function through
a governmental body.
9. medical direction: Direction given to an EMS service or paramedic by a
physician
10. mobile intensive care units (MICUs): An early title given to an ambulance-
style unit
11. profession: A specialized set of knowledge, skills, and/or expertise
12. professional: A person who follows expected standards and performance
parameters in a specific profession.
13. protocol: A treatment plan developed for a specific illness or injury
14. reciprocity: The process of granting licensure or certification to a paramedic
from another province or agency
15. registration: Giving information that will be stored in some form of record
book 16. standing order: A type of protocol that is a written document signed
by the EMS system's medical director that outlines specific directions,
permissions, and sometimes prohibitions regarding prehospital care that is
rendered prior to contacting direct medical control.
