ACID
AIM:
Prepartion of 5 nitro salicylic acid from salicylic acid by nitration process.
PRINCIPLE:
The salicylic acid is made to react with nitric acid to produce the 5 nitro
salicylic acid during which the nitro group is substituted at 5th position from the
carboxylic acid of the benzene ring and this is known as nucleophilic
substituition reaction and the process is known as nitration.
CHEMICALS REQUIRED:
Salicylic acid = 3.0 g
Conc.Nitric acid = 7.5ml
Water = 10ml
PROCEDURE:
Weigh accurately 3.0 gm of salicylic acid into a clean conical flask. Dissolve
the substance with the minimum quantity of water at 10ml and add 7.5ml of
conc.Nitric acid gradually with continue shaking.Boil the contents on water
bath for about 15 – 20 minutes until all the reddish brown gas is completely
evolved. Cool the contents and pour it into 100ml fresh water in a 250 ml
beaker if necessary cool the contents in a ice bath to precipitate out the
yellow coloured nitro salicylic acid.
Filter the precipitate, dry, weigh and calculate the percentage yield produced.
